How to check eligibility, get your card, and use it at empanelled hospitals in Tamil Nadu
Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) is the world's largest government-funded health insurance scheme, covering over 55 crore beneficiaries across India. It provides cashless treatment up to ₹5 lakh per family per year at empanelled hospitals for over 1,900 medical procedures including surgeries, chemotherapy, dialysis, and ICU care.
In Tamil Nadu, PM-JAY operates alongside the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS). Together, they cover families with an annual income below ₹72,000. Benefits extend to treatment at both government hospitals and empanelled private hospitals across the state. There is no cap on family size — all members are covered under one card.
Go to pmjay.gov.in and click 'Am I Eligible?'. Enter your mobile number and OTP, then search by your name, HHD number (from the Socio-Economic Caste Census list), or ration card number. Alternatively, visit any empanelled hospital or Common Service Centre with your Aadhaar card — they can check eligibility on the spot.
Step 1: Confirm eligibility at pmjay.gov.in or your nearest CSC.
Step 2: Visit an empanelled hospital or Ayushman Mitra centre with your Aadhaar card.
Step 3: Complete biometric authentication.
Step 4: Your Ayushman Bharat card is generated. No fee is charged.
The card is valid for your entire family and can be used at any empanelled hospital across India — not just Tamil Nadu.
From 2024, all senior citizens aged 70 years and above are eligible for Ayushman Bharat coverage of ₹5 lakh per year — regardless of their income or existing insurance. This is a separate card from the family card and must be applied for at pmjay.gov.in/ayushman-vaya-vandana.
