Full sum insured at premiums of just 1.5–5% — losses covered by government
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana provides comprehensive crop insurance to farmers against losses due to natural calamities (flood, drought, hailstorm), pest and disease attacks, and post-harvest losses. The premium is heavily subsidised — farmers pay only 1.5% for Rabi crops, 2% for Kharif food crops, and 5% for commercial/horticultural crops. The remaining premium is borne by the Central and State governments.
• Farmer's premium: only 1.5% (Rabi), 2% (Kharif), 5% (commercial crops)
• Remaining premium paid by Centre and State governments
• Coverage for sowing failure, standing crop loss, post-harvest loss, and localised calamities
• Claims settled directly to bank account
• Full sum insured — not capped at premium amount
• Mobile app for loss reporting within 72 hours of damage
All farmers — loanee farmers (enrolled compulsorily when taking crop loans) and non-loanee farmers (voluntary enrollment). Tenant farmers and sharecroppers are also eligible. You must cultivate the notified crop in the notified area.
• Aadhaar card
• Bank account details
• Land records / patta / tenancy agreement
• Sowing certificate (for Rabi crops)
• Crop loan account number (for loanee farmers)
Enroll at pmfby.gov.in, at your bank branch, CSC, or through insurance company agents before the cut-off date (usually 2 weeks before crop sowing). Non-loanee farmers must actively enroll each season. If crop damage occurs, report within 72 hours via the PMFBY app or toll-free number 14447.
