Subsidy up to ₹78,000 on rooftop solar + 300 units free electricity per month
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana helps households install rooftop solar panels with a government subsidy of up to ₹78,000. Once installed, a 3 kW system generates enough electricity to provide 300 units per month free of charge — eliminating most electricity bills and allowing excess power to be sold back to the grid.
• Central subsidy: ₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, ₹78,000 for 3 kW+
• Up to 300 units/month free electricity
• Excess electricity sold back to the distribution company (DISCOM)
• Collateral-free bank loans for the remaining cost
• 25-year life of solar panels — long-term savings
• Net metering — your electricity meter runs backwards when you generate excess
Any Indian household with a valid residential electricity connection and a rooftop area of at least 10 sq.m. The house must be your own (not rented). Priority to households consuming less than 300 units/month.
• Aadhaar card
• Electricity bill (latest)
• Bank account details
• Photograph of rooftop
• Property ownership documents
Register at pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Apply for a rooftop solar system, choose a registered vendor from the portal, and get a technical feasibility survey. The DISCOM approves and issues a net meter. After installation, the subsidy is credited directly to your bank account within 30 days.
