8.2% interest — highest government-backed savings rate for girl children
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government-backed savings scheme for the girl child under the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' initiative. It offers 8.2% annual interest (highest among small savings schemes), with the entire maturity amount and interest fully tax-exempt.
• 8.2% interest per annum (current rate, revised quarterly)
• Minimum deposit: ₹250/year | Maximum: ₹1.5 lakh/year
• Full tax exemption — investment, interest, and maturity under Section 80C
• 50% withdrawal allowed after girl turns 18 (for education)
• Account matures when girl turns 21 or on marriage after 18
• Can be opened at any post office or authorised bank
Parents or legal guardians of a girl child below age 10 years. One account per girl child. Maximum two accounts per family (exceptions for twins/triplets). Account is in the girl's name.
• Girl child's birth certificate
• Parent/guardian's Aadhaar card and PAN card
• Parent/guardian's address proof
• Photograph of parent/guardian
Visit any post office or authorised bank branch (SBI, Canara, Bank of Baroda, ICICI, Axis, etc.) with the above documents. Fill the SSY account opening form. Deposit the initial amount (minimum ₹250). The passbook is issued immediately. Deposits can be made monthly or annually for a period of 15 years from account opening.
